Maria Montessori was the first female Italian physician. She noted the importance of the first six years of a child's life. She believed that everything that a child saw, heard and felt in their environment shaped their lives. She also believed that children who spend the first six years of their lives in loving supportive environments model the behavior.

Maria Montessori stated, "that every child, by instinct, wants to learn and grow to the limits of their ability. In the first six years of life they do so by imitating those around them. To help our children, we must prepare the physical and social environment."
